how many of you have experienced one of
these emotions in the past day can I see
a show of hands amazing isn’t it this
happened to me way back I was a third
grader walking towards my school bus
with a spring in my feet excited about
my new haircut my neighbor was his girl
in high school and she said look at
those bangs
he thought they look pretty I froze for
a moment and walked away slowly we’ve
all experienced criticism that makes us
feel insignificant incompetent even the
question to you is is it possible that
you can consider yourself consider these
emotions we could be from gender
minorities or religious minorities
racial minorities or geographical
minorities or we could have experienced
pressure from our teachers or our peers
our parents or even ourselves all of
these emotions make us feel a sense of
having slowed down being dragged down or
even having to stop completely is it
possible that we could work around these
instead James Allen said a strong man
cannot help a weaker unless the weaker
is willing to be helped and even then
the weak man must by his own effort
develop the strength that he admires in
another my little sister had this mad
teacher on that particular day she said
some harsh things to her things that
made her feel unwanted in a classroom
full of children she told us the story
tears streaming down her cheeks at home
that day this was in Saudi Arabia where
my mother couldn’t visit our school very
easily so instead she sat her down
asked her to take a few deep breaths and
then asked what are you feeling right
now
this helped my sister identify the
emotions that she was going through and
then my mother said say to yourself I am
strong I am blessed these words gave my
sister the vocabulary that power Doron
to be the teacher par excellence that
she is today
I asked you can you identify which
emotions you are going through how we
speak to ourselves
matters if you tell yourself I’m awesome
you are listening if you tell yourself
I’m terrible at drawing you are
listening and if you tell yourself I
will change my mindset you are listening
today I will reiterate six powerful
affirmations for positive self-talk
because these have helped me shift they
are I am I feel I see I speak I do I
know I am our first affirmation the
corridors of schools stand many a story
hey Susie don’t want to play rough yo
superwoman but the karate stunts your
growing muscle and the top ranker being
called the nerd Oh looking no play makes
Jack a dull boy
Doughboy dog boy Doughboy come let them
friend him that’s all it takes in
today’s virtual world a click of a
button to unfriend you just when you
thought you had made a friend for a
lifetime and when that button clicks on
social media something clicks off inside
you in my journey of nearly two decades
as a learning and
unprofesional these voices continue a
senior colleague once told me this
enthusiastic demeanor you display is
unbecoming of a leader can you stop
being you ha ha
hey there listen to that boys inside
it’s loud and clear it reminds you I am
your strengths live within you sometimes
it takes an encouraging soul to pull you
from within yourself and remind you that
you are sometimes it takes a person
discouraging me from within myself to
remind me that I am I have been created
with the competence all I need is to
sharpen it believe it live it I am I
don’t see I feel our second affirmation
Caroline Casey opens our eyes to the
possibility of not needing eyes to see
in her talk looking past limits her
parents encouraged her to believe in
herself they gifted her for her 17th
birthday one driving lesson she learned
the truth then that she was and had been
since birth legally blind however well
could she get to being 17 without
knowing that she was brought up by
parents who decided that for her there
would be no special need schools no
labels and certainly no limitations
after discovering this Caroline said to
herself I will drive
she had the determination that her
father had read into her since she was
such a child he taught her how to sail
knowing she could never see where she
was going she could never see the shore
nor the destination but he told her to
believe and to feel the wind in her face
and that wind in her face made her
believe that she would drive and she
swore nobody would find out that she
couldn’t see because she didn’t want to
be a failure she reminds me of the time
I had just learned driving and we were
returning from a picnic near sand dune
the desert I was at the steering wheel
of my father’s car it got stuck in the
sand and it refused to move forward I
was all knotted up and ready to switch
seats and give up but one look from Papa
said we are going nowhere until you get
the car moving today years later many a
sandstorm doesn’t blind me
I just feel courage from the wind in my
face I feel our 3rd affirmation I see
you must become an engineer when you
grow up and you a doctor hey if you take
up sports will you be nothing less than
such intend dunker these are someone
else’s dreams not yours have you seen
your own dreams when NASA set out to
send a man to the moon it became every
employees dream even the janitor at NASA
believed he was helping put a man in the
moon so what’s your dream are you seeing
it already can you paint it in the vivid
colors of the rainbow my 87 year old
grandmother and brought us colorful
dreams into handkerchiefs
she gives family and friends not long
ago as she was creating one of these I
told her how I missed in opportunities
to study at a school I aspired in a
heartbeat she said simply dream a bigger
dream now I realize today that the
Stanford grandma souvenir mug I gifted
her holds pride of place in her heart
the pride of seeing the generations
after her dream their dreams see your
future self and see it in high
definition
but you will convert your losses into
lessons that you will create history I
see and now for a fourth affirmation I
speak focusing on the need for
expression even when you have seemingly
lost your voice how do you find your
voice and say what you need to say it
isn’t always easy and what we tend to
fear is get
no as a response no seems like not just
a rejection of my idea or my request it
seems like a rejection of my being thus
fear of rejection in consumers we all
want to be loved and it may feel
sometimes that saying what you need to
say may leave you unloved but hey the
idea is yours
and early rejections of your idea cannot
stop you speak kindly to yourself and
then make a request clearer say it
recall the words of elites from a
president APJ Abdul Kalam he said
positively if you get no as an answer
it just means next two-part unity the
metre campaign gave a voice to many
around me it reminded us that there are
many a silent whisper amongst us little
children within us that had our voices
muffled when all we wanted to do was to
scream today we give ourselves the
courage to say what we need to say speak
your story is waiting to be heard I
speak our fifth affirmation is I do at
the Hinduja Hospital not years ago my
father felt crippled by transverse
myelitis it was a condition that started
with severe pain in the spine
overnight he couldn’t walk he was
dragged to the emergency room first
there are no blots of urine from his
bladder and the bladder would have burst
he had lost control over his lower body
the sensory tests indicated delayed
responses after a battery of tests he
finally told that his survival rate was
less than 0.001 percent I’ll take it he
told the doctor he had always told us do
go do it he started medication days
later he lifted his leg off the bed just
one centimeter but he said to himself do
physiotherapy
started he could now take a step forward
not sideways not backwards a month later
he asked the doctor to remove the
catheter he wanted to urinate on his own
I do he pleaded today he walks on his
own two feet he continues to say I do
you can do it too yes I do and now for a
final sixth affirmation it is I know I
am different by sexual preference
I know lana wachowski inspired many
through her speech at the Human Rights
Campaign 2012 she directed the Matrix
trilogy with her sister during her
speech she also came out to the public
about being transgendered she talks of
the time that she hears the school bell
ring and the order get in line
girls in one line boys in another she
walked past the girl’s line and then the
boys lying and yet felt a sense of
gravity a feeling of differentiation
that confused her and she stood in the
middle she was just trying to fit in she
mentions how without words to defend
herself without examples without models
she began to believe the voices in her
head that she was a freak that she was
broken and there is something wrong with
her she also shares her conversation
with her hairdresser they’re giving me
an award for being myself and her
hairdresser said yeah I guess you make a
pretty good you yeah there isn’t a lot
of competition good thing just imagine
if you had lost what a message so my
question to you is are you losing in
your journey of trying to fit into this
world that is complicated enough already
are you stealing further and further
away from yourself if you were to be
nominated for an award value
nation for being you would you win are
you winning are you winning at being you
with my husband beside me we watch our
son grows slowly in quiet reflections I
find my purpose for today’s message
I request you to join me repeat after me
I am I feel I see I speak I do I know I
am many beings today I perform for you I
feel your pain and wish to create belief
for you I see a wonderful tomorrow and
trust you do too I speak my message
sometimes in other times I need your
support I do my part and certainly need
your encouragement I know I know I know
that this is but a beginning nurtured by
each other we will blossom further there
must be [Applause]
