115 that is the number of Americans who
died last year as a result of the misuse
of in addition to opiate medications
opioids or painkillers are commonly used
in the healthcare industry for the
treatment of pain in patients 64,000
that is the number of Americans who died
in 2016
leading to opiate drug abuse to become
the number one cause of accidental death
from which 3 out of 4 new heroin users

Disease Control and Prevention that
submitted that toll for 2017 it’s
estimated to be closer to or over 70,000
deaths this means that this is 76 that’s
higher than a daily death rate from 2000
from 2004 the previous year just as up
show of hands how many of you have heard
of or seen someone who has experienced
prescription drug abuse or hope your
addiction related problems the following
image is slowly becoming the norm in the
lives of Americans as the types of the
ongoing epidemic exacerbates covering
all corners of our nation as a matter of
fact Syracuse is one of the cities
that’s experienced in the face of the
ongoing epidemic the worse as pitches
are constantly being rushed in into
emergency departments suffering from the
effects of obvious overdose in addition
to these drugs as a pre-medical student
I wanted to create something that really
was impactful for society I wanted to
create something that really changed the
way that we saw that we saw healthcare
in the know it all started at the
emergency department at the local
hospital where I had the opportunity of
working as an emergency department as a
medical scribe where I had the chance of
seeing firsthand the consequences of
prescription drug abuse to the number of
patients being rushed in convulsing and
seat and sitting in front of my eyes
this led me to say to myself that’s all
had to be done in particular there was a
scenario when an elderly man was rushed
in due to the effects of abuse he was
actually undergoing withdrawal symptoms
as a result of heroin usage I still
remember the look in his eyes or
hopelessness and just wanting someone to
be there for him but yet there was
nobody and as soon as I was just
following the doctor around taking notes
I wanted to do something more I wanted
to create a bigger difference but didn’t
know I didn’t know how to this is this
is what led me after two months of
working there to say to myself that
enough was enough and I wanted to create
something magical that really stood out
for everybody
additionally as that patient was
undergoing as the physician was
assessing the patient I didn’t really
appreciate the way that he himself and
the nurses were referring to a patient
as he was a recovering I recur in a
patient because of his addiction to
heroin I didn’t appreciate it why
because you are nobody to judge anybody
because you don’t know whether in the
next 5 or 10 years that’s going to be
you and the same footsteps as I
mentioned previously I decided to quit
my job and we came they came lost with a
vision of digital healthcare but what is
digital healthcare and why is this so
vital to combating the largest public
health emergency effect in our nation
all digital healthcare allows for the
interconnection of all this all the
sectors involved in the treatment care
and guidance of patients from the
patient from the patient himself herself
all the way to the insurer and the
government agencies like the DEA and CDC
which are in charge of ensuring optimal
quality care is being provided at all
times during my time here at Syracuse I
had the opportunity or creating a
digital health platform that provides
patients with the first
pre-programmed treatment plants on the
market offering multiple languages that
pretty much guys on throughout the
treatment progress regardless of race
condition or social economic status we
are we are current after the working
with surance providers and government
agencies as we strive to really
introduce a solution where we can
provide anybody with the trimming care
and guidance that they deserve today I
feel honored to stand in front of all of
you and have the ability of spreading
the message that enough is enough
and it is time to take action and
empower patients and providers to better
track manage and improve health and
health care delivery for everyone as my
college career comes to an end I
couldn’t be any more proud of how far
I’ve come especially so as as an
individual coming from what people call
the slums in Colombia where I was
projected to not be anybody in life I’m
proud of how far I’ve come to the point
of standing here in front of this
marvelous crowd and have the ability to
share the vision that it you can be
anybody and really tackle any kind of
problem as long as you always keep in
mind that what you’re doing is to better
society I want to really take this
opportunity to tell other minority
minority groups that don’t do not let
what you come from determine your faith
I want to have the ability to tell
others that to not feel the shame of
based on what’s happening in the current
news and everything just because as
minorities we’re built you know we are
expected to to lose what we are built to
drive no matter what your race or why
your social economic status is I want to
challenge everyone to read I want to
challenge everyone to overcome the
boundaries the barriers that society has
built upon us
I want to challenge everyone to be the
best person that you can possibly be to
our last make society a more inclusive
and better place for everyone now it is a time to change the world thank you
