The Sport of Cricket: Equipment

good to go so I’m going to talk to you
about the cricket equipment and
everything you need to play is in this
bag here more or less we’ll start off
with the most necessary piece of
equipment for your male batsman this is
a box it’s called I know in hockey is
called a jock but in cricket terminology
it’s called a box this protects some of
the most important anatomy so after
you’ve got that on you’ve got your pads
and these are nice heavy pads
tough leather and three straps on the
back strap them onto your legs because
we don’t want to get a cricket ball
hitting you in the shins trust me so
you’ve got two of those some people
elect to wear this which is a thigh
guard it goes on like that and protects
you when you’re standing because usually
stand side on to the to the ball and the
bowler that’s if you’re a left-hander
this is your right side
and you’ll stand will stand like that so
there’s the ball hops up and hits you
there you’ve got some protection there
then after that you’ve got cricket
gloves they’re a little bit like hockey
gloves and they’re articulated so they
have bending action as you can see this
one is for your top hand right you know
that because the thumb is just like a
normal glove thumb this one here is your
bottom hand this is the glove that faces
the ball okay so when you’re batting
you’re holding the bat like that that’s
why you need this big piece of padding
on your thumb to get hit by a ball on
your thumb you’ll know it and there’s a
nice round sort of padded part at the
end as well so those are your gloves
after that another very important thing
the second most important part of your
Anatomy is your head goes on tighten it
up underneath your chin it’s got a grill
here to stop the ball from hopping up
and doing some unwanted dental work on
you there’s some space there obviously
the balls are not going to fit through
there just so you can see properly it’s
got a guard here and a guard here to
protect your ears from sort of the side
of your head it’s nice and tightly nice
and snug
it’s a hard helmet it’s like a riding
helmet more or less sort of a similar
thing and then of course very important
is your bat cricket bats are made out of
willow they’re made out of one piece of
wood they’ve got a nice thick grip
there’s a rubber sheath over it which
you can change if it wears out and
there’s a sweet spot on the bat around
there where when you hit it there feels
good there’s no particular equipment for
bowlers you just Bowl away but the
person catching the ball called the
wicket keeper has specific equipment
pads very similar to the batsman’s pads
except they’re a bit thinner and a bit
smaller obviously to stop the ball from
going past the wicket keeper and going
down the field and creating runs these
are thinner smaller pads because the
wicket keeper needs to be very nimble
and be able to jump around and finally
the wicket keeper also has a pair of
gloves they’re big the flappy catching
gloves they’ve got rubber texture on
there to help you stop the ball as it
comes whipping in at you and it’s got a
kind of webbing between the finger and
the thumb so you can trap the ball like
that and that’s all the equipment you
need to play cricket
