Paolo from Trivium Discusses ‘In Waves’

with each new album this metal band gets
even more successful hi I’m Rebecca
Breeden and welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re speaking with Paulo from
Trivium about their album in waves
we interviewed Matt not too long ago and
he told us that your next album would be
the best thing that you guys had done so
why don’t you explain to us why that is
the case I’m glad he made that big claim
that I had to explain
it’s definitely our most well-rounded
album in terms of you know I’m biased
but I think the music is really killer
it’s definitely our most mature who the
songs we put together to just we took a
year year and a half to just put them
together not even right we started in
2009 so we’ve had a long long time to
put it together the visuals the video
the artwork we spent a year just trying
to come up with the vision of what in
waves would look like how we were going
to bring it from the album to the stage
you know all the ideas that came along
with that so just from start to finish
it’s our most complete album usually a
lot of times one thing always never gets
done the way you want it you know it’s
like the artwork or the first video
you’re like aw man I wasn’t good enough
but we just knew this time you know
we’re five albums in we have to nail
this one start to finish has to be
perfect so anyone that’s been into
trivia my I think you’ll be more than
pleasantly surprised by all the songs on
it
what is the significance of the title in
waves the thing is with all the lyrics
all the titles and everything this time
we wanted to do the opposite of Shogun
which is a little bit more I know you
could kind of tell what Matt was talking
about it was the Greek mythology
Japanese culture I mean it was all
metaphors for things but with this it’s
a lot more personal the thing that Matt
really wanted to do this time was not
give anyone a definite answer of this is
what this song is about this is what in
waves means to us it’s whatever it means
to you is what it means
we wanted the songs to fit people’s
lives in like in their own context to
not tell them that the song was about
this time this happened to me sometimes
when you do that you kind of look it
loses the mystique and sometimes it
works sometimes it doesn’t but that
that’s just kind of the goal this time
is to like leave it open to other
people’s interpretation
in one interview i read it said that you
guys were focused on controlling the
flow of information with this album do
you wanna tell us a bit more about that
we didn’t want things to just kind of
come out randomly you know we kind of
made like a timeline of like this is
when this was going to come out that’s
been the video of your release and the
teasers and it’s tough now to create any
excitement when an album comes out
because once you put the information out
and here’s the artwork and here’s this
it’s like all right cool and then the
next day I know a new album the same
thing so you have to just have some sort
of plan to rolling out your album the
only way to do that is to have a really
tight schedule on tight you know control
of information in a way because once
it’s on the internet fair game
it was crazy we had a song played on
American radio like somewhere in like
Baltimore and within 30 minutes it was
ripped and put on YouTube and that’s
just how it is and that’s the world we
live in if you don’t want something said
or don’t want people to hear a song you
don’t put it out but it’s cool we can’t
pay for that kind of promo you know
where people just take the stuff and put
it out there and spread the word fast
yeah it’s double a shorter yeah it
definitely is but I feel like we
definitely want to be on the right edge
of the sword where you know you’re with
your with information with the
technology you’re not trying to fight
against it and make it like you know a
time that’ll never be again
