First Look | Killing Jesus

killing Jesus is about a man a real man
and I was very interested in making film
by Jesus that would appeal to believers
and non-believers it’s very touching
it’s very relatable actually very timely
it’s a big undertaking moving everybody
out into the middle of the desert feels
like you’re coming out to somewhere
quite special this set is pretty
incredible we have 93 cast we have four
and half thousand extras we’ve got 250
crew on set every day a lot of pressure
one of the things that we talked about
in this is is we wanted to get a kind of
very raw take on things and for it to be
real because it was times from watch
more brutal the other thing was to
create a believable east Mediterranean
world 2,000 years ago which I don’t
think many other movies have done
Jesus was a Middle Eastern man it was
dirty there were flies through a
sickness there was ill health what we
wanted to do here was get some real
authenticity the actors they’re wearing
heavy costumes they’re wearing wigs are
wearing beards we have quite a lot
prosthetic makeup in this as well
it’s a very international cars it is a
multilingual cast some people are from
England some from America Israel and a
lot of people have roots in Arabic world
as I do it’s an epic piece and I think
we’ve sort of just been concentrating
making these people human and people
that can relate to them more than
anything else you have to kind of loan
yourself to it your own experience to it
I read through the script of course I
noticed that they have this historical
connection seem to open up everything
for me the characters are so well
written you’re getting to know these
historical figures in a very very
intimate sense and you’re looking at it
from the point of view of how do the
people at that time see Jesus because of
that it was so important for me to play
Jesus as human as possible because
that’s what he was trying to do he was
trying to show humanity its beauty
obviously the biblical story is being
told and told and told again but we
found trying to sort of get a
perspective looking at the
conspiratorial social sort of political
realities of the time understanding what
coalesced that resulted in crucifixion
itself there was a fascination in this
story if anything there is within this
script a lot of subtleties it’s not just
played out in front of a crowd
what’s beautiful about this is it’s a
real kind of gritty hard-nosed version
that strips back all of the kind of the
gloss that we’re that we’re kind of used
to and it’s not for the faint-hearted
I’d call it’s about what defines
civilizations it’s kind of deals with
everything this got a bit of everything
for everybody in it it’s a pretty great
story pretty extraordinary person to be
telling the story about
