amazingly enough we were given
permission to dive with southern right
whales the peninsula valdes it’s kind of
hard to describe what it feels like to
snorkel towards a 50-foot whale that is
potentially protecting its newborn calf
your heart is in your throat at the same
things and as I got closer the calf acts
that came towards us which was a little
bit of a relief but then you wonder if
mom’s going to start reacting to it one
of the most incredible experiences I’ve
ever had in my life and especially
underwater was staring this gigantic
mother whale right in the eye and having
her look right back at us we sat down on
the bottom with her and at one point she
even closed her eye and seemed very
relaxed the fact that these mothers were
so trusting in us either that or they
didn’t see us as a threat at all
but the fact that we could sit on the
bottom was this huge mother will and her
essentially newborn pretty much helpless
calf was a powerful experience
