Social Video Games: Playfish and Electronic Arts

there’s social network games like madden
superstars and restaurant city are
taking Facebook by storm hi I’m Rebecca
Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re speaking with clay fish to
learn more about their projects so tell
us about the history of playfish when
and how was the company formed so
playfish was formed in 2007 by some
veterans from Glu Mobile who wanted to
get into the social gaming mark and they
had an idea of how to make games that
would be played by friends together so
they started making games for facebook
the company was very successful they
quickly became the number two player in
space and they were bought out by EA
just that over a year ago tell us about
play fishes relationship with EA there’s
an opportunity to take you know what
playfish knows which is how to be
successful in the connected digital
downloaded game space and how to take
that and bring that to other parts of EA
and then at the same time take ea’s very
strong publishing business and of course
it’s strong franchise and put those
things together and make something
that’s even bigger and stronger what
would you say differentiates play fishes
offerings from the rest of yous projects
the social games when they come out
alive it’s only a little bit of what the
game is going to become because you can
change the game on the fly so the games
going to evolve based on how people
react to it 12 years after it launches
the game is going to become what the
players wanted it to be and that’s
pretty different from the way you know
the way usually works give us a general
overview of the types of games play fish
grades the sort of distinguishing factor
of playfish games is that they are
social by nature you know in Madden
you’re gonna trade players with your
friends to build your team similarly you
know in restaurant city your friends are
there you’re going to go visit their
restaurants they’re going to come to
your so there’s going to be different
kinds of gameplay but it’s always social
it always involves connecting with your
friends and having a having a social
network around it in your opinion what
would you say has led to the popularity
of these games people are getting their
friends to play because they want to so
they grow virally that’s very powerful
so there is this kind of momentum that
builds around the game because people
like it to what degree would you say
that your games are tied to social media
sites like Facebook so right now
Facebook has been the primary rights i
think the exclusive platform for for
playfish titles as we move on to the
mobile platforms that does in some sense
d couple us from Facebook and can also
use other means to connect players what
would you say is led to the spike in
popularity of mobile games it’s a very
powerful platform of course the fact
that the new generation of smartphones
is so powerful make just makes it a
natural the other thing of course that’s
been you know a big boost is things like
the app store right they’re very very
easy to use way to buy games has
certainly just made it a natural thing
all those things come together do you
ever envision the standard home console
games taking on the same kind of
connectivity and interactivity as play
fishes games I think it’s inevitable I
think the excitement of playfish
becoming part of EA and that as we move
forward you know that connection that I
was talking about earlier about really
bringing the the best of both parties to
make something really big and powerful
thank you very much thank you
