Passing Gas | National Geographic

I’ve left the bar and I’m headed uptown
where I’ve set up a race with a
difference I’m creating a contest
between put power pedal power and fire
power what I want to do check this out
I’m gonna fill that thing with gasoline
my plan is to create a speeding trail of
gasoline flames just like in the movies
but where does that fit in with my race
I’m gonna light it I want to time how
long it takes to get from this end up to
the other end okay so I want to see how
quick gasoline burns but to spice things
up a little bit I want to set you off
and the flame off and you look like
you’re built like a runner the three of
you to set off at the same time to see
who can cross the line the first you you
versus fire so which what do you think I
think if I was gonna do it no question
what do you reckon going with the fire
the bike for sure they go with the bike
going in me of course those hot choices
are a man cycling a man running the
burning gasoline or will it be a dead
heat right okay so this is Chuck if he’s
putting in the gasoline into the trough
right guys you ready you ready my
running man Roth off to a great start
whilst the bike is still picking up
speed
and the runner takes it with the bike a
close second but where on earth is the
gas guys come back in there look at this
still not here yeah and you can see the
gasoline here look pools of gasoline
unlit and finally stop the clock movies
like the movies lie to you absolutely so
the runner was the winner the cyclists
wealth just didn’t have time to build up
speed over 50 yards but the gas is a
real slow mover coming in a distant
third forest go second third you beat
you both be a trail of burning gasoline
now I’m gonna mean it hang on a minute
hang on you know why that happened no
it’s quite simple gasoline itself isn’t
flammable no it’s not it just burned no
no it did but it wasn’t gasoline burning
it was the gasoline fumes it was the
vapor okay it has to mix with the oxygen
in the air so as it is as it sits in
there now it’s vaporizing now the thing
is here it’s like a line of dominoes
everyone has to be lined up perfectly so
you like the first bit and there are
enough vapors and you have to kind of
wait for the next bit to warm up and
vaporize all the way down the line it’s
always looking for the perfect mix of
air and gasoline vapors and by the time
it’s got that right gasoline is not as
it is as quicker burn as we think
