BioBlitz Finds 2,300+ Species in Golden Gate Parks | National Geographic

entitled under microscope these bio
blitzes help us awaken the public
especially those in cities to nature in
their own backyard that’s the first time
I’ve ever seen a thought about that
close yeah right i’ve no query on but
and i saw the guys are called chorus
frog sighs it’s partly just a wonderful
call to action but it also does science
you know we’re actually measuring what’s
in the park and we’re making record of
it and in some cases we’re finding
absolutely new things that the Park
Service didn’t realize existed in this
park we’re here for the eighth of 10
National Geographic sponsored BioBlitz
is in national parks in this case it’s
in the Golden Gate National Recreation
Area and including its affiliated areas
muir woods and Fort Point it brings
together dozens if not hundreds of
scientists to spend 24 hours studying
and inventory the various species of
plants animals in vertebrates fish birds
even microbes that exist in the park and
the idea is to do an inventory and at
the end of that 24 hours see what we’ve
come up with black beetle today I think
I do not use this to reach insects that
you wouldn’t know to be able to get like
the inchworm caterpillars the way they
move this is the caterpillar of this I
think I need a cubicle
we’re so excited to be out here the
weather doesn’t matter it was beautiful
yesterday and we’ve seen such an
incredible diversity of plants and
animals nothing could be better and
we’re able to take a lot of this
information the pictures and the videos
that kids are shooting student
scientists who are out here today and
sharing it on the wireless network in
real time so that others who couldn’t be
here could it maybe get a little sense
of what it’s like it may become next
time around telling people that you know
they should take a look where they are
and start enjoying nature and
discovering it so that it’s not just
having one of these events here which is
really great but using it as a model for
people understand that it’s not hard to
get out in nature and know it and it’s
really not scary it’s actually wonderful
to do so and that’s one of the big
messages
so the grand total for the number of
species that we found at this bio bliss
was 2304 probably easily surpassing our
last count which was around a thousand
five hundred
