this surf rocker is pretty much living
the dream traveling the world following
his two passions surfing and music
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Donovan Franken writer I know that
you’ve been in quite a few bands over a
year in history why don’t you tell us a
little more about your musical evolution
as it were I played with a group of
friends that I went to high school with
and we did that for probably 10 years
and then around the age of 30 I met my
wife and we got married and I started
playing songs for her in the living room
I wrote up enough songs to make a record
and I signed a brushfire records for my
first record and Jack Johnson produced
it and that’s sort of like the way I
started in music is that way you know
recording a record on the North Shore of
Hawaii with Jack I’ve noticed that you
seem to have fairly broad musical tastes
so what do you count as some of your
influences definitely Jimi Hendrix and
Bob Dylan and Bob Marley and you know I
love listening to Ben Harper and she
loved and Jack’s I love all types of
music and it’s really great there’s so
much music out there I love them people
are like aw have you heard this before
and I love being turned on to the new
music
so what’s your songwriting process like
I don’t know I don’t really have a
process I don’t know too much about
songwriting I just I just go for it so
whatever happens happens sometimes the
music comes first or the words but
usually what I write down and write say
first usually is the thing that I is
that I stick with if you think about it
too much and you overthink the words and
all that stuff it kind of loses its sort
of like innocent sort of passion that it
began with what is it about
collaborating musically that you’re
drawn to sort of the way that I learned
how to play music was was that way
collaborating with people and learning
other people students and playing songs
that way you could have an idea and then
you could sit down with somebody and the
idea could get completely twisted into
something really great good luck and
thank you very much yeah thank you
