what are you doing if you were wondering
what I was doing right then I was
recreating a real-life situation
starring the coach from my basketball
team this is the way he reacted when we
did not box out a player and there are
other occasions where he would curse us
out and tell us he treats us this way
because we play at a national level and
were ranked last year he says if you do
not want to be treated like this
you should play uncompetitive rec
basketball oh hello there all you
parents in the audience is it okay for
coach curses and those clipboards in the
presence of your child in the name of
making them a better athlete pretty
normalized practice to me if my coach
were to say why the didn’t you get trap
him get on the baseline
I wouldn’t think anything of it but what
if my English teacher said why the
didn’t you diagram that sentence
correctly this is important wouldn’t
work so well would it
what normalizes semi violent gestures
and profanity and middle school sports
training and not in the classroom what
makes the same means of motivating not
okay in the classroom it’s in the way
you read and write going to be more
successful for you in life than your
basketball skills why is it that parents
complain more when their child comes
home saying that their English teachers
pushing them too hard but not their
coach so is it that we let coaches
behave this way because what they teach
is more important than order English
teacher teaches or is it Corey Jarvis a
coach at a high school in Atlanta
Georgia
till $10,000 from the school one parent
said much adieu ten grand missing a
coach is a leader of young men not an
accountant this shows that parents
rather have a dishonest coach than
sacrifice a team success but what if my
English teacher allotted twenty five
hundred dollars a year for textbooks
what would happen then this
mean-spiritedness
and profanity seems to happen more in
boys sports than in girls sports
I got a front-row seat to this last year
when we scrimmaged our girls team every
time they would score our coach would
yell at us and make sure we knew exactly
what we did wrong but every time we
would
score their court coach would encourage
them and uplift them to do better
finally let’s just say for a second
sports are more important than academics
are we then suggesting to convey a super
important lesson we should do it by
cursing breaking and screaming thing I
mean screaming with boys this is
probably true in 2017 New York Times
article Andrew Reiner a professor at
Towson University wrote about the way we
raised boys he says that boys fathers
are more analytical with their daughters
allowed them to show sadness and smile
both boys use words like win and proud
he says boys seem to shame each other
for showing interest in his English
class not nonfiction but literary
fiction and poetry boys have been taught
that this is soft and weak if this
continues what will happen to our
generation future generations and the
woman of woman who hang with these men I
think I might ask my coach to put his
clipboard down and visit my English
class thank you [Applause]
