well I’m sure you all know we landed
this Rover you know on Mars that was
really a historic day now first let me
ask how many of you actually watch the
landing in real-time that’s pretty good
number you’ll be pleased to know you
were part of 50 million Americans who
were watching that that evening and so
what I was going to start doing is to
kind of take you back to that time and
show you a video about what actually was
happening you know in the mission
operation room
six five four three two one start
when people look at it it looks crazy
that’s a very natural thing sometimes
when we look at it it looks crazy it is
the result of reasoned engineering
thought but it still looks crazy the top
of the atmosphere down to the surface
it takes a seven minutes it takes 14
minutes or so for the signal from the
spacecraft to make it to earth that’s
how far Mars is away from us so when we
first get word that we’ve touched the
top of the atmosphere
the vehicle has been alive or dead on a
surface
probably seven minutes
entry descent landing also known as EDL
to refer to as a seven minutes of Terror
because we’ve got literally seven
minutes to get from the top of the
atmosphere to the surface of Mars going
from 13,000 miles an hour to zero and
perfect sequence perfect choreography
perfect timing and the computer has to
do it all by itself with no help from
Graham if any one thing doesn’t work
just right it’s game over things are
looking good I’m a tree
Dibble reports narrator face now
beginning to feel the atmosphere as we
go in here vehicles just recorded via
tones that it has started guided entry
design vehicle is meeting the stewards
way to the target because unique
deceleration starting first anchorperson
just recording that we are seeing G’s on
the order of 11 12 14 we are now getting
clinically colossi we should have
parachute deploy around off 1.7
the parachute is deployed we are
decelerating
de Lesseps has separated work on the
ground expand we’re down to 90 meters
per second at an altitude of 6.5
kilometers from setting standing by for
backshell separation
we are in powered flight
for an altitude of 1 kilometer
descending
