A fine balance for creativity – An artist and a mother | Radhika Maira Tabrez | TEDxBaileyRoad

we’ve had such wonderful performances
today we’ve had such wonderful talks
about creativity but let me just tell
you what the world thinks about
creativity okay in a recent survey
conducted amongst fifteen hundred CEOs
creativity was identified as the single
most important trait for future leaders
now juxtapose this fact to another fact
put forward by a recent research by
Devin Proudfoot and his team from Duke
University now these guys they conducted
a comprehensive research on gender and
creativity and they found out that a
thumping majority of people both men and
women mind you associated creativity
with what they consider to be masculine
traits which were independence daring or
risk taking ability and endurance and
hence these survey takers they
collectively deduced that men are
inherently more creative than women now
let’s look at these two statements shell
v1 men are considered inherently more
creative than women and two successful
leadership in the future would need
creativity more than anything else put
them together and you know how it is
unlikely that we’d have gender equality
in the boardrooms in the near future
right but having said that let me ask
you wonderful people how many people
here believe that our creativity is
regulated by a chromosomes likes a male
pattern baldness how many of you have
believed that one’s gender defines one’s
creative potential brilliant I’m so glad
to see none of the hands going up yes it
doesn’t men and women are equally
creative being and it’s established
scientific fact although of course the
way it plays out in our world is a lot
different women rarely get as many
opportunities as men to explore the
creative potential right now what is the
ultimate aim of creative
innovation doing something that’s never
been done before creating something
that’s never been created before and
nobody respects or celebrates innovation
like the Nobel Foundation right they
give out Nobel for all these wonderful
work that you do and let me share this
with you only roughly 5% of Nobel Prize
winners still date our women let’s take
another example of a creative
environment the movies we all love
movies right the movie award season just
ended and let me share out of over 450
nominations for the Best Director in the
history of Oscar only 5 nominations have
been for women 5 that’s not even a
percentage I can do and only one of them
Kathryn Bigelow has gone ahead and won
it for her phenomenal work in The Hurt
Locker
now if that is not an imbalance I don’t
know what is but if because of all these
examples the situation has started look
very bleak for all of us creative women
out there let me share another angle to
the same story since the year 2007 with
an exception of a year or two women have
always featured in the list of Nobel
Prize winners let’s look at this year
almost 40% of the 49 women who won a
Nobel well it’s 48 really because Mary
Curie won it twice but 40 percent of
that happened post-2001
out of the five women that I mentioned
who been nominated for a Best Director
three have been post-2000 in fact I
think this year Oscar saw its very first
women nominee for Best cinematographer
she didn’t win but she did she was
nominated fabulous work and the 2017
fortune 500 ranking carries more female
chiefs than any of the previous lists
since the fortune 500 first ran in 1955
so what does all that mean this means
that we women are fortunate enough to be
born in exciting times we have access to
more education more opportunities more
of this world in general than ever
before and quite literally if ever there
was a time for us to flex our creative
wings and reach for the sky this is it
but today I speak to you not just as a
woman and as an artist and all I’m
speaking more like a mother today and
motherhood well that’s a whole different
ball game isn’t it
because once we have a mother a life is
a little different where our life is
actually a lot different I’m baring my
pre-pregnancy shoes and I was just
telling him they’re killing me
because you know my feet swole up but
yeah my life is a little different or
little as you would call it is a polite
now I understand this this image is a
little exaggerated for comic effect and
I do not have five is a four five Wow
five I do not have five children I have
just one although my house still looks
like that with just one I should maybe
check maybe they a couple of more kids
hiding somewhere in the closet the last
time I checked there was just one but
anyway yes so this is this is what it is
when you’re a mother chaos is your
constant state of being that’s who you
are
that’s where you live and I’m not just
talking about a physical mess but a
mental messes well you are now handling
the whole life of a tiny little being
and everything that comes with it yeah
so your physical life is strewn with
feeding bottles and nappies and Legos
and your mental space is filled with
doctors appointments and feeding
schedules and nap schedules or maybe
when they grow up like my son has school
schedules and playdates and weekend
classes and when do you even be talking
about this kind of environment you you
can imagine the kind of bandwidth it
takes
for example when I first learned about
this TEDx talk my first question to
myself was is it something I want to do
is it something I can do my first
question was oh so it’s a Saturday what
is my son doing that day aw he’s got
chess and Taekwondo classes so I need to
get his drop off in his pickup worked
out yeah so that’s a life that’s a life
of a mother as a mother your life
revolves around the lives of your
children at least for the first few
years we work when they letters we eat
when they let us we go to the Louvre and
the letters we sleep well never really
because you can’t really call it sleep
can you it’s more like crashing on the
bed when your batteries are totally
drained out only to be woken up seven
minutes later because your son is
thirsty and he cannot find his water
bottle which I must mention I put like
12 inches away from him before I went to
bed anticipating this where are you in
so as you can imagine none of this is a
very conducive environment for a
creative life right because a life of
artists is a life of patience is a life
of leisure time is a life for
flexibility of working hours and these
are words that are alien to a mother who
has to master the art of taking 47
seconds showers and even those showers
she has to miss most day because she
could not find 47 seconds in her life
happens all the time but why I’m here
today is because something beautiful
something rather odd happened to me in
the last five years of me having and
raising my son out of this chaos and
madness that surrounded me magically I
don’t know how but came out my creative
being I’d always wanted to be a writer
of course but you know how it is life
gets in the way
but when my son was born I had these
erratic sleep schedules and because he
had erratic sleep schedules and I’d
essentially be left with these small
pockets of time when he’s fine I’ve
managed to go back to sleep but I have
lost mine and so I turned to my laptop
for comfort at that time and what
essentially started out as a time filler
activity as the months and weeks passed
took a life and shape of its own because
that is the power of art once you write
within the right range of it it pulls
you right in just like Earth’s gravity
and so two years of writing one and off
later I had on my laptop my first novel
I hadn’t planned on it I didn’t know
what to do with it it started out with a
short story got longer and longer and
honestly before I knew it it was already
sitting on a publishers desk as a soon
to be put out there book and for an
artist any artist as the famous song
goes god I hope you guys are not too
young to know the song because that will
make me feel old but there’s this
beautiful song sweet dreams are made of
these thank you for northing and making
thank you very much you’re a kind you’re
a very kind guy but you know but that’s
that moment that moment when you created
something and it’s ready to meet the
world outside it is beautiful it is
addictive the high you get I tell you
you’d want more and more of that moment
but for that I needed a system I needed
a process and that’s when I realized
that in in the last two years of doing
this I have sort of developed a system
around it and I needed to get more
structured about it the idea of art is
you need flexibility you need a open
ground to graze on but you also at some
point needs some sort of a system some
sort of structure which is just trying
to just keep you on the path and that’s
what I’d like to share with you here but
the other thing that started around the
same time and I’m going to use it
extensively her as a metaphor is my
foray into gardening now I’ve never been
that person with a green thumb or green
fingers or whatever they call it I’ve
never really tried gardening my father
is a excellent gardener but I’d never
tried it but I wanted to I mean I I know
it’s a very calming and a very unwinding
activity and I’m sure you agree how much
the mother of a newborn baby needs to be
calm down
so I thought let’s just give it a go
let’s try gardening so I set up a
kitchen garden now even the ones amongst
here who don’t engage in gardening we
know what’s what’s the basics of
gardening it’s a fairly simple process
yes we know what the plants need to grow
we know they need Sun soil water right
and which is the world’s most famous
garden that we know of
if the clicker would oblige Eden the
biblical Garden the home of Adam and Eve
so I’m just using this word because it’s
a name that you’re likely to remember
and it serves for a good acronym for the
learning that I’m about to share and
also because gardening is a very good
metaphor for it and the first e in this
Eden is exposure what is the first thing
we need to find out when we decide to
set up a kitchen garden where do you get
the best sunlight because we need a
constant and sufficient exposure to
sunlight for in order for your plants to
go draw healthily and I realized the
writer in me did not have that kind of
an exposure I mean sure I had always
been not a vyd reader and I was
constantly surrounded by books but that
wasn’t going to be enough
I needed to now constantly surround it
by writers but how is that ever going to
happen I mean the only time I left home
was for my son’s doctor appointments or
his playdates now whatever your creative
pursuits are I wanted to be a writer you
might want to be a chef you might want
to be a dancer you might want to be a
singer you a painter the beauty is there
already is such a massive collective of
fabulous artists out there and thanks to
social media this collective is now
accessible to us I realized I just had
to position myself in such a way that
I’m in that constant stream of light I
could join Facebook groups I could join
blogging teams I just had to make myself
accessible to them and then to me if I
compare my Facebook feed
from the feed of say four years ago 80%
of it right now is filled live with my
writer friends and then endeavors
because as an artist you need to network
with the fellow artists in your craft
you need to stay in touch
it’s like this flock of geese really
flying in their peculiar formation
there’s a reason they fly this way
they’re using each other’s strength and
support to reduce wimps reduce wind
resistance and they’re trying to get
further with what they would have
otherwise gone all by themselves but
that brings us to be determination now
soil is as important to factor in
gardening right as any I’m sorry I have
a bad throat so I’m just keep this in my
hand yeah so soil is as important a
factor right but are all kinds of soils
equally fertile no they’re not and
that’s something it constantly need to
remind yourself off when you expose
yourself to creative lives of others
because some of their works would come
to fruition long before yours remember
you still have a child who’s taking like
95% of your time we can’t discount that
and the thing about exposing yourself to
creative lives of others is that
sometimes as a mother you feel yours is
moving way slower don’t fret
that happens it is quite possible that
me and my friend would start a project
at the same time she would have already
finished her as shipped it off to a
publisher well all I’ve written is this
and it’s not even any good really I’ll
have to trash it anyway but yeah that
happens don’t lose hope that happens the
point is you saw the seeds of your
creativity and then you keep at it with
dogged determination and then of course
there’s the next e that will help you so
no matter how fertile your soil is you
can make it more fertile right by adding
water in Mineo you need to water your
plants daily
so similarly you need to get some work
done on your craft even if it’s not much
every single word that you write as a
writer every single stroke of brush as a
painter every five minutes igg that you
practice as a dancer it’s really scary
so every three below jig that you
practice the dancer it’s adding to your
overall experience but as mothers what
we tend to think is my talents aren’t
going anywhere let my kids grow up I’ll
focus on them when they’re a little
older I’m afraid that is not how it
works
your talents if left alone and neglect
it just like the seeds of your plant may
dry up and die and you may not able you
may not be able to revive them and also
manure the special something that you
add to make your soil or your creative
mind a little more richer I’d like to go
and attend events I’d like to go and do
things that’ll make me that enriched my
experience that’ll make me a better
storyteller but time for you is the most
limited resource as a mother so what do
you do fine you clear out some space you
give up on a few things
I don’t watch regular scheduled TV
anymore I go to fewer very fewer much
fewer in fact in Dhaka because of the
traffic social events I hardly ever call
my friends and family and don’t worry
and you cause they understand I’m not
asking you to be antisocial they
understand they understand you have an
agenda
I only log into social media for work I
mean that is the intention but then
either I get distracted by a video of a
dog doing salsa or maybe a political
debate I shouldn’t have gotten involved
in and before I knew it two or two hours
have gone by but yes I’m trying to
control that but the idea is I take that
time away and then I try to go to
literary events to art symposiums to
museums to events like these where I got
to hear such lovely talks the point is
you first of all keep on working at your
craft but you also keep on enriching it
with whatever experience you can manage
to get with whatever little time you
have once you’ve done that that will
bring you to newness innovation the
ultimate
El Dorado of creativity this is where
we’re all trying to get to make
something new to create something
innovative now once your creative mind
is working like a well-oiled machine
because you’ve been doing the other
three things you actually realize that
motherhood instead of being a hindrance
is actually supporting your creativity
and I see how written on a lot of your
faces true every child is different can
somebody get her to but yes every child
is different and hence every mother’s
experience is different and you can use
that uniqueness you can harness it to
fuel your innovation innovation is
basically about doing something that’s
never been done before right creating
something that’s new for you motherhood
is actually when you hit the real pay
dirt of new stuff
I mean from that’s never before surge of
hormones to the emotions you feel you
feel a lot of emotions then the
situations you face and the way you
encounter them it is all new stuff for
you and all you need to do is be able to
use that towards your art your art will
be that much richer for it that’s much
more unique for it who knows your hobby
of taking creative photographs of your
child can give birth to famous
photographer for newborn babies or for
that matter all those experiments that
you do in the kitchen
to come up with this new dishes for your
child could make you a famous chef who
specializes in fun recipes for kids or
the lovely dresses that you made for
your little girl can can give the birds
to the fashion designer inside of you
you never know the point is balancing
motherhood
and creativity will always be a
challenge I do not deny that but with a
little practice hopefully Eden and a lot
of patience it can be done because one
thing that I do know is that mothers do
everything with the overdose of love and
passion and that’s exactly what art
needs as well so just go home give it a
good thought and just see probably the
motherhood that you think is an
impediment to your create
life could pretty much just be the bull
you know the shot in the arms of the
artist and you need it it happened with
me it happens and if you do take on that
journey from here in your collective
journey of motherhood and creativity I
wish you all the best
oh and like the very wise gentleman said
yes we can [Applause]
