To Streak or Not To Streak

for some it’s a rite of passage for
others is their ticket to the spotlight
but for everyone it’s the thrill of the
chase hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome
to watchmojo.com and today we’ll be
learning more about the phenomenon of
streaking what have you learned about
the history of streaking there were some
key players and there were key moments
in streaking that influenced you know
the handful of guys that are out there
today the first one that most people
know would be Michael O’Brien is the the
twickenham streaker of 1974 a lot of
people recognize that picture of him
being led off the field by security with
his arms out the long hair he looks a
lot like Jesus with the policemen’s
helmets you know selectively covering
his part then several years after that
near early 80s was Erica row also at
twickenham in England at the same rugby
match she was obviously famous because
she was a woman so she was out there
topless without any shame at all and
then in the States there was the kissing
bandit who was around for the I guess
some early 80s maybe even into the 90s
she would run out at baseball games man
she would always run up to the pitchers
and kiss them on the cheek what drives
most people to do this motivations are
always different you know for it for
each of them when you look at someone
like Mark Roberts who’s been doing this
for so many years for him it really is
about the entertainment he loves to go
out there do his best to make people
laugh he kind of sees himself as a class
clown does it say around the whole
stadium or
you do it successfully we have sixty
seventy thousand people in the stadium
screaming and cheering their heads off
and laughing you know for him that’s the
motivation where is someone like Jimmy
jump perhaps he’s out there more to know
to spread a message whether its
political or if there’s a certain cause
that he’s trying to promote and he’ll do
that by you know putting messages across
his t-shirt or website addresses to
direct people’s attention in a certain
way what made you want to document this
phenomenon or tradition the original
intention was never to actually make a
film about streakers and so when we
started the project it was more about
Jimmy jump because he was the first
character we’d seen on television we
were watching a football match one day
on TV and Jimmy jump had jumped from the
stands and he had run fully clothed
across the field and he’d thrown the
Barcelona flag into one of the players
faces so the original intention was to
tell you know a story about Jimmy and
who is this guy that’s jumping on the
fields and whys of doing that and how
many professional sports streakers are
there around the world well you know
there’s lots and it depends how you
define it as professional and
non-professional because of course
there’s many know college kids around
the world who would do that on a drunken
$10 bed the three that we focus on on
the film are Jimmy jump Mark Roberts
who’s the world’s most prolific streaker
he’s been stringing for 16 years he’s
done 500 events and then there’s Ron
bent Simon who’s from Montreal who
hasn’t done as many events maybe he’s
done five or six they’ve all guarded him
like international media attention and
finally have you ever streaked know I’ve
never streaked were you know kind of
consider ourselves the authority on
streaking because we’ve talked about it
with everyone and we’ve looked at it
from every viewpoint we’ve discussed it
from every single angle so I think the
only thing left to do it actually would
be to rip off our clothes and go out
there and do it for ourselves we have
this movie to promote now so what better
way to do it
